Background: Health care costs have been increasing each
year more than the average rate of inflation. In Jordan, about 6.7% of total
Ministry of Health (MOH) budget were spent on purchasing medications in 2013
and took the share of 58% of all MOH bids. This increase in expenditure of
health care has prompted many governments, health insurance companies, and
health providers to adopt strategies to manage the high cost of medication Formulary management is one of the major
strategies employed in hospital settings to manage the quality and costs of
medications. These formulary systems should be designed and updated by
multidisciplinary committees called Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees (PTC)
who ensure deliverance of the drug is compared with other available
alternatives with respect to effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use
of pharmacoeconomics by PTC when making decisions in MOH hospitals
Methodology: A cross-sectional survey questionnaire was
developed using earlier studies. Then it was distributed to all pharmacists
(51) who were members of PTC in all MOH (28) hospitals after the study was
approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Data collected was analyzed
using descriptive statistical analysis by MS Excel
®
Results: A total of 51 survey questionnaires were sent
to pharmacists members of PTC. Out of these, 42 (82.35%) questionnaires were
completed and returned. About 71% of the respondents said that using of
pharmacoeconomics data in making formulary decisions was important, in spite of
that, half of the respondents in the study stated that they have either, never
or rarely employ pharmacoeconomic data. Majority of respondents reported that their
hospital didn’t have staff with pharmacoeconomic skills. Furthermore, only 31%
of the respondents perceived that they had an adequate knowledge of
pharmacoeconomics. Participants rated drug efficacy and toxicity as “the most
important” and extent of drug monitoring as “the least important” factors in
making hospital formulary decisions. Finally, the majority of respondents
(95.2%) expressed their interest in attending educational workshop on
pharmacoeconomic
Conclusion: Although, pharmacists in PTCs recognize the
importance of pharmacoeconomics role in managing formularies, most of them
didn't rely on pharmacoeconomics to make formulary decisions in Jordan. This
limited use was due to some barriers related to resources, guidelines,
expertise, lack of awareness of training and knowledge
